Every December, as the lights go up and the world becomes a little softer and more sentimental, I find myself thinking about the people who arrive at my door (or whose doors I visit) feeling stiff, tense, sore, or simply worn down by the year. And this Christmas, one story came to mind that captures the journey so many of my clients experience, a story you’ll recognise, though perhaps not in the way it’s usually told.
It’s the story of Scrooge, but not the cold-hearted, money-counting version we know from the book.
This is Scrooge with a bad back, struggling to move, waking up each morning feeling older than his years, and quietly believing that discomfort was simply the price of getting on in life.
In truth, he reminds me of many people I meet, lovely humans who just want to move freely, breathe easier, and enjoy their everyday lives without their bodies holding them back.
So let me share this festive tale… told through my eyes, the way I imagine it.
🎄 A Christmas Eve Filled With Aches and Grumbles
The night before Christmas, Scrooge paced around his dimly lit home, muttering complaints under his breath. Not about Christmas itself, though he’d tell you that was the problem, but about his back.
Every twist hurt. Every bend was stiff. Even sitting still felt like work.
When I hear clients describe mornings like this, or evenings where they collapse into a chair because their body feels “locked,” I think of Scrooge on that night, uncomfortable, frustrated, and convinced that nothing could change.
He wasn’t miserable.
He was defeated.
And defeat has a way of creeping into the mind quietly, until the person barely remembers what comfort feels like.
It’s often at that moment, when someone says, “I just want my life back” that they reach out to me.
👻 The Therapist Ghosts Arrive
The Therapist of Christmas Past
The first ghost drifted in with a dusty old massage table from decades ago. He reminded Scrooge of treatments from the past, deep, heavy pressure, elbows digging into muscles, and that grit-your-teeth approach that left people sore for days.
Scrooge winced just remembering it.
“Not again,” he said. “That kind of therapy made my back worse!”
I’ve met many people with this same story. They think therapy must hurt to work, and then they’re surprised when something gentle ends up being the thing that helps.
The Therapist of Christmas Present
Next came a ghost carrying every modern gadget imaginable. Heat pads. Foam rollers. Massage guns. Stretch bands. All the things people are told they should try.
Scrooge tried each one.
He groaned, he bent awkwardly, he stretched and winced, and finally he shook his head.
“These gadgets are more trouble than they’re worth,” he huffed.
And honestly, he wasn’t wrong.
A gadget can’t listen.
A device can’t respond to the subtle signals of a body in distress.
A tool can only do what it’s designed to, not what you actually need.
The second ghost sighed and disappeared.
And Scrooge was left standing there, still stiff, still sore, and now hopeless.
🌟 The Therapist Yet to Come – And This Is Where I Step In
At midnight, a gentle warmth crept into the room. No rattling chains. No theatrics. Just a calm, grounded presence.
That was me.
I didn’t barge in with machines or heavy pressure. I didn’t ask Scrooge to twist or stretch or brace himself. I simply said:
“Let’s see what your body needs, gently.”
This is the heart of how I work.
I don’t impose.
I don’t force.
I don’t overwhelm the body with pressure it can’t process.
Instead, I help the body switch off its tension patterns so it can return to balance.
A small release here.
A soft reset there.
A moment of pause where everything reorganises.
Within minutes, his posture changed.
His breathing deepened.
The tightness eased.
The expression on his face softened into one of pure, quiet relief.
“Is this… normal?” he whispered.
This moment always moves me, because people often forget what “normal” feels like. They forget what it feels like for their body to feel light. Open. Free.
🎁 Christmas Morning: A New Beginning
When Christmas Day dawned, Scrooge woke up and something extraordinary happened.
He moved without thinking.
He stretched without bracing.
He walked without that familiar, dragging discomfort.
He caught sight of himself in the mirror and almost laughed, he looked taller, brighter, younger.
Not because of magic, but because tension had finally released its grip.
He practically danced down the stairs.
He stepped outside and took the deepest breath he’d taken in years.
And he said something I hear so often after a first session:
“I had no idea my body could feel like this again.”
His Christmas wasn’t saved by tradition.
It was saved by finding the right approach, one that listened, respected, and understood what his body had been trying to communicate.
✨ Why This Story Matters
This story isn’t really about Scrooge at all.
It’s about the countless real people who come to me feeling exactly as he did:
✔ Tired
✔ Tight
✔ Stiff
✔ Fed up
✔ Unsure if anything will help
Many arrive after trying everything they can think of.
Most have lived with discomfort for far longer than they should.
And almost all of them are amazed by how much change can happen through gentle, knowledgeable touch.
You don’t have to push harder to feel better.
You don’t have to stretch more, grind more, brace more, or withstand more pressure.
Sometimes the body just needs someone to listen, truly listen, and respond with precision and respect.
That’s what I do.
